Peter Mallo

April 5 – April 30, 2019

Opening Reception: Friday, April 5th from 7:00–10:00pm

La Bodega Gallery is pleased to present FOUND IN TRANSLATION, a solo exhibition by Peter Mallo. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. The exhibition will be on view from April 5th through April 30th with an opening reception on Friday, April 5th from 7:00–10:00pm.

FOUND IN TRANSLATION is a group of works by Mallo that is based on the premise that iconic works of visual art may be translated by breaking the originals into their constituent parts, and treating them as raw material. The resulting works do not resemble the originals, neither do they contain the same trajectory of expression.

In describing the process of creating this series, Mallo states, “My works have taken for their starting point a single moment, a particular aspect or gesture, or the imagined passage of time, a place where my language overlaps with the language of the original. From that single point, my works find a new trajectory.” Mallo also considers these works to have been “translated” from the works of Western painting that have had the most influence over his vocabulary. “The works have a dual nature for me,” Mallo says. “On a conceptual level, the works strive to meet the premise of the possibility of translating an image, and the reciprocal nature of all images throughout the history of art. These works also reveal how and why the originals had such an effect on me, and through the process of their making, have become highly personal.”

This exhibition will also include a limited-edition book, also titled FOUND IN TRANSLATION. The first section comprises an essay on the possibility of translating an image, and it touches on themes of originality, ownership, and peeling away the layers of meaning of an iconic work. The second section contains cropped images of the paintings paired with iconic or historical text fragments that elucidate some part of how the works were conceived. Full color, 36 pages. Limited edition of 30 books.
